From Hopelessness to Hope – One Family’s Journey
Veronica, her husband Tom and their two twin 14-year-old daughters had a rough year.
Tom’s mother passed away, and Alex, Tom’s 46-year-old disabled brother began living with them. When Tom lost his job, the family couldn’t pay rent and became homeless.
“For the first month, we were able to afford a motel, but then we ran out of savings and found ourselves at DuPagePads. Without having a car, we had a hard time getting 
our family to the overnight sites each night,” Veronica shares.
The family began working very closely with their DuPagePads case manager who provided them with bus passes for transportation to and from the Interim (Overnight) Housing sites.
When Alex became ill with an infection, the family’s case manager enrolled them in DuPagePads Medical Respite program. This program provides motel stays for those with a referral from a medical institution need of a safe place to recover from acute medical issues. While Alex was recovering, Tom worked with their case manager on Medicaid questions, agency resources and options for housing.
Tom then began to work with DuPagePads Career Employment Solutions program and now has many employment leads.
