A few weeks ago, DuPagePads invited Harmony, Hope & Healing (HHH) to provide a workshop for the families and individuals we serve who are homeless.

HHH provides creative, therapeutic and educational music programs that offer emotional support to homeless and underserved individuals who are struggling to overcome the detrimental effects of poverty, substance abuse and/or isolation.

Recognizing the value of incorporating music into a holistic approach to healing, the HHH music curriculum contains singing, movement, playing percussion instruments and theme-related readings. Sessions include breathing and vocal exercises which teach participants easy and healthy ways to relieve stress and anxiety.

It was a really neat experience to hear many different voices coming together. The workshop was a great way for people to share a new, positive experience with each other while giving everyone an escape from their daily stress and problems,” Janelle Barcelona, DuPagePads Vice President of Development.

Research consistently demonstrates that music positively affects the brain and body. Studies show that performing and even just listening to music can decrease anxiety, increase optimism and promote overall healing.

The HHH workshop created an affirming environment for self-expression and left participants feeling refreshed and empowered.

I’m thankful for this workshop, it was really helpful. It relaxed me and got me through the weekend. It took away a lot of my sorrows. I would love to participate in it again,” said Michael, a DuPagePads program participant.
