At DuPagePads, we are committed to providing transformative opportunities for individuals experiencing homelessness. We are deeply fortunate to have many incredible partners in our community who help to make that a reality. Recently, three of our Interim Housing Center guests embarked on an inspiring journey by participating in an 11-week culinary course called Café Liberty. This program not only equips participants with essential culinary skills, but also fosters personal growth and pride in its participants.

Café Liberty was created by the Dan Gibbons Turkey Trot Foundation (DGTT) and is known for its dedication to culinary skill development and empowerment for veterans and their adult family members, individuals in recovery programs, and parolees. Now, individuals experiencing homelessness in DuPage County can also enroll in Café Liberty’s comprehensive training programs, which in addition to offering technical instruction, also provides an opportunity for our IHC guests to learn and grow in a supportive environment that builds their self-worth.

“I thought it was excellent,” shared Harry*, one of the DuPagePads . “Not only did we learn cooking skills and how to use a knife properly, I also think it helped with confidence in everyday life.”

This collaboration is a testament to the power of community partnerships in providing individuals with the tools they need to rebuild their lives after experiencing the trauma that can often be associated with homelessness.

By partnering with organizations like the DGTT Foundation and Café Liberty, DuPagePads expands its impact, ensuring our clients receive not only shelter and food, but pathways to sustainable independence in a home of their own.

Now, with newfound skills and a belief in themselves, our three graduates are ready to transition into steady employment in the culinary industry! Following graduation from the program, all three clients plan to focus their time at the DuPagePads Empowerment Center, where the Education and Employment Services team is ready to assist and support to help find the perfect culinary career for them.

We share our sincere gratitude to Dan Gibbons and Chef Chris Buckingham for running this program, and for all they do in and for our community! To learn more about Café Liberty, visit www.cafeliberty.org.
