DuPagePads Medical Respite Program Video
In our latest video, Jennifer Coyer, Client Service Center Director, shares how DuPagePads helps people recover from acute illnesses and move toward stability.
What is DuPagePads Medical Respite Program?
Families and Individuals who are homeless often have a wide range of complex health conditions. When discharged from the hospital without a place to rest, they risk compromising their health which may lead to hospital re-admission.
With a referral from a doctor, DuPagePads Medical Respite program provides a place to recuperate and recover from acute medical conditions. Along with this short-term housing, DuPagePads provides case management to ensure program participants receive medical attention and the support services needed to better manage their health condition.
Last year this program served 55 individuals in 50 households by providing them with a safe and comfortable atmosphere to heal with having access to support services. 60% of those served are now in stable housing.
The reasons for participants needing the Medical Respite program varied: mobility issues 36%, infections 26%, hospital surgery/recovery 24%, accident 6%, chronic disease 4% and pregnancy related 4%.
At the most basic level, housing provides a place to recuperate and access critical needs. Furthermore, it provides a secure place to sleep and store food, clothing and medications.
Thank you to the Amicus Foundation, the Community Presbyterian Church of Clarendon Hills, and Northwestern Medicine and generous community members for making this program possible!
